Suggested Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 11:1-6
"Out of Season"!
"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
longsuffering and doctrine."
II Timothy 4:2
We are admonished in these words to scatter the Living Seed both when conditions are favorable,
and when they seem to give little promise of success. We often excuse ourselves for not giving
a word of testimony by saying, "It was not an opportune moment!" It is true that we must be
"wise as serpents and harmless as doves," but this applies to the method of our approach
rather than to the season of our sowing!
"In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not
whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good." (Eccl.
11:6)
I heard recently of some Christian men who had been engaged to hold meetings in a community
where there was a great need for the Gospel. As they drove to their destination, they saw that,
due to the heavy rain storm through which they were passing, they would not have time for their
usual season of prayer unless they held it while they were driving along the highway. This they
decided to do. At last it was the driver's turn to pray. He slowed down and with his eyes on
the traffic began to earnestly beseech the Lord for the souls of them to whom they would soon
minister. Between his own tears and the rain that was beating against the windshield, his
vision became clouded and he failed to see that the traffic light ahead had turned red! A
whistle sounded, and soon a man in uniform put in his appearance. With his face wet with tears,
the man of God put his arm around the officer, and pulling him part way into the car out of the
rain, explained the situation. The traffic cop saw that these were Spirit-led individuals, and
reverently removed his hat. Soon they were dealing with him about his own soul. The Holy
Spirit blessed this "out of season" testimony, and the officer was gloriously saved!
Yes, you testify for the Lord "in season," but how are you at scattering precious seed "out of
season"?
