Suggested Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:11-16

The Convicting Word

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Hebrews 4:12

The Bible is a living instrument of God by which the Holy Spirit reveals to men their sin and the need of salvation. This is well illustrated in the following story.

It seems that a salesman from a New York concern had registered in a Chicago hotel. He had been stealing money from his company for some time; and the thought of the disgrace which might come to him, were he to be discovered, forced him to work long hours in the daytime and then seek places of amusement at night to avoid the qualms of conscience. After many days of such harried existence he was stropping an old-fashioned razor one morning, and finding no piece of paper on which to wipe the blade, he tore a page out of the Gideon Bible. Using it to clean the razor, his eyes caught these words, "The wages of sin is death." Conviction struck his heart, and smoothing out the page, he read, "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

The startled salesman read the Bible for two hours, and then on his knees beside the bed he acknowledged himself to be a sinner and in need of a Saviour. Having received Christ, he realized that a new life had been bestowed upon him; and so he wired the firm in New York, and made a full confession. To his surprise he was not prosecuted nor even discharged, but was allowed to pay back something each month out of his salary until the debt was erased. It is said that he is now living in New Jersey and bears a good testimony to the convicting power of the Word of God and the regenerating, soul-satisfying work of the Holy Spirit.

Are you daily consulting and studying your Bible so that the Holy Spirit through its pages may also convict and guide you? Unless you do, you cannot expect to reach higher spiritual ground, for it is the Word that sanctifies (John 17:17).
