Suggested Scripture Reading: John 14:1-12

I Am The Way

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 14:6

Jesus said "I Am." Again and again He used this expression. "I Am" is one of the names for God. When Moses asked the Lord what to answer the children of Israel when they should ask him "Who sent you?" the Lord replied, "Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, 'I Am' hath sent me unto you" (Ex. 3:14). God is the eternal One. He did not say to Moses "I was," or "I will be," but "I Am." God has no past and no future, but He lives in the eternal present. Jesus asserts that He is God by taking upon Himself this name, "I Am." He said, "I Am" the bread of life, the good Shepherd, the Light of the world, the Door of the sheep, etc.

In John 8:58 He said of Himself, "Before Abraham was, I Am." The Pharisees knew the meaning of that name and accused Jesus of blasphemy and "took up stones to cast at him." Stoning was the penalty for blasphemy. But Jesus proved that He was indeed the "I Am," by going through the midst of them and so passed by.

Jesus was not only God, but the Way to God. He is the only Way to Heaven. We do not know much about Heaven. The Bible does not tell us where it is, but it does tell us how to get there. It is by Him who said, "I Am The Way."

A traveler in a strange country asked a native lad where a certain town was, and the lad said, "I don't know 'where' it is, but I can tell you how to get there." The Bible is silent concerning many things about Heaven that we would like to know, but it is very clear on how to get there.
